What is Mystery Function?
Mystery Function gives you one example of an unknown function and a board of seven rows. Type a short string, run it through the function and inspect the output. Each experiment spends a row, so useful tests distinguish competing explanations rather than merely producing another example. When you think you understand the transformation, the I know it control switches from gathering evidence to testing your prediction.
How to play
- Open today's puzzle and inspect the supplied example before using your rows.
- Enter text in the active input and select Run. Compare the returned string with the exact input, including repeated characters and positions.
- Choose another input that could separate two possible rules, while keeping an eye on the remaining rows.
- Select I know it when you are ready to predict an output instead of running another probe.
Do you need to write code?
No. The input is ordinary text, not a code editor. Run sends that text through the hidden transformation and displays its output. Programming-style experimentation can help, but entering a small string is enough to begin.
What makes an input useful?
Choose one that distinguishes rules you are considering. Repeated characters can expose position-dependent behavior; changing one character can make a local effect easier to spot. Each submitted probe reduces the remaining row count, so compare the existing examples before spending another.
