What is Sonar Puzzle?

Sonar Puzzle hides five submarines in a six-by-six ocean grid. Click or tap a closed square to search it: a miss returns the distance to the nearest submarine you have not found, with diagonal movement counting as one step. The mission starts with ten pings left, and a miss reduces that allowance. Finding the fleet is the immediate goal; finishing with fewer misses earns a higher mission rank.

How to play

  1. Read How to play, then choose Dive in to open the current mission.
  2. Click or tap a closed grid square to search for a submarine.
  3. Use a miss’s number to compare possible locations of the nearest unfound submarine; a diagonal step counts as one.
  4. Keep searching for all five submarines while watching Pings left and the found counter. After finding a sub, remember that distance clues concern the remaining unfound fleet.

What does a number on a missed square mean?

It is the distance to the nearest submarine you have not found. Diagonals count as one step, so a 1 can point to a diagonal neighbor as well as a horizontal or vertical one. A found submarine no longer supplies that distance: the official example shows a square beside a hit reading 2 because another unfound sub is farther away.

How do misses affect your mission rank?

The instructions award Admiral for zero misses, Captain for one or two, Commander for three to five, and Lieutenant for six or more. Running out of pings gives Court-martialled instead. A missed square reduces the allowance shown as Pings left; aim to locate the fleet with as few misses as possible.

Can you play without signing in?

Yes. You can search the grid and return to your browser’s saved board without an account. The Stats page offers Google sign-in to keep device stats and each day’s result. Mission medals also contribute to a career rank.
