Word puzzles can ask you to discover a hidden word or interpret clues for a connected grid. Letter-feedback games build evidence through submitted guesses; crosswords let answers support each other through shared squares. Choose by the kind of thinking you want, not just by how small the puzzle looks.
For a hidden-word puzzle, separate confirmed positions from letters that still need a home. Before submitting, check whether your candidate respects the feedback or tests something useful. Read any hard-mode requirements first: a game may restrict exploratory guesses once it has revealed clues.
In a crossword, solve a clue you recognize and use its letters to revisit neighboring entries. Keep an uncertain answer provisional. If several crossings refuse to fit, reconsider that answer rather than forcing the rest of the grid around it; one plausible mistake can create a cluster of apparent dead ends.
Use all the constraints, not just the general meaning. Check length, known letters and the wording of the clue, then look for evidence that distinguishes the remaining candidates. A large vocabulary helps, but careful revision matters too: the answer you thought of first does not get to ignore a later clue.
