What is TimeGuessr?
TimeGuessr asks you to date and locate a photograph using the details you can see. Each round pairs a map pin with a year choice, then reveals the photograph's context and shows how far your guesses missed. The Daily challenge contains five rounds. It combines geographical recognition with visual clues to a period, so knowing a place is only half the task.
How to play
- Choose Daily on the official homepage to open the five-round daily challenge.
- Inspect the photograph for clues such as signs, buildings, vehicles and clothing, then choose a likely place and period.
- Click or tap the map to place your pin. On a phone, open the map using the map button beside the photo.
- Set the year with the slider or the left and right year buttons, then select Make guess.
- Read the year difference, distance and separate scores on the result screen. Select Next Round to continue through the daily set.
How are the year and location scored?
Each contributes up to 5,000 points, for a maximum of 10,000 in a round. The result screen separates the two scores and reports both the number of years missed and the distance from the correct location. A good location guess does not replace the year guess: check both before submitting.
How do you make a guess on a phone?
Tap the map button to switch from the photograph to the larger map, then tap where you want to place your pin. Set the year with the slider or year buttons and tap Make guess. Check that both the map pin and the year are set before submitting.
What happens after you submit a photograph?
The game reveals the year and location, supplies a caption and displays your distance and year error alongside the points breakdown. Next Round advances the set. A submitted daily-round result can remain available after a refresh in the same browser; this is not cross-device syncing.
