What is Guess the Chain?

Guess the Chain asks you to recognize a business from the pattern of its US locations. The mystery can be a restaurant, store, gas station, bank or gym. Six guesses, comparison feedback and optional clues help you work from a geographic footprint to a chain name.

How to play

  1. Inspect the mystery chain’s dots on the US map, noting concentrated and empty regions.
  2. Enter a chain name in the guess box beneath the map and submit it.
  3. After a miss, check the business category, location-count direction and map overlap.
  4. Use Compare to see your guessed chain’s locations in blue, or Get a clue for more information.
  5. Identify the chain within six guesses and share the result without naming the answer.

What does Compare show after a wrong guess?

Compare overlays your guessed chain’s dots in blue so you can inspect where the two footprints coincide. The feedback also distinguishes matching, similar and different business categories, and tells you whether the mystery has more or fewer locations. Use those signals together: sharing a region does not mean sharing a business type.

What information do the clues reveal?

The five clues reveal the category, location count, founding year, headquarters state and first letter, one at a time. You choose when to request them; the shared result records how many you used. A headquarters clue narrows the business search, not every state where its stores can appear.
