What is Metazooa?

Metazooa turns the animal family tree into a daily guessing puzzle. Choose an animal from the suggestions, and a wrong guess reveals the taxonomic group it shares with the hidden species. A broad group leaves many possibilities; a closer branch narrows the search. You have 20 guesses, with an optional hint that costs three of them. The tree and its table view give you two ways to examine the relationships you have uncovered.

How to play

  1. Enter an animal name and select the matching species from the suggestions to submit it.
  2. Read the shared taxonomic group. Use that relationship to choose an animal on a more promising branch.
  3. Open Show table to inspect the ranks and guess counts, or return to the tree to explore its nodes.
  4. Find the mystery species within 20 guesses. A hint reveals a rank in exchange for three guesses.

What does a wrong guess tell me?

The game shows the taxonomic group your animal shares with the mystery species. That is biological relatedness, not a similarity score for appearance or spelling. Read the named group before choosing your next species.

Can I inspect the clues without the tree?

Show table switches to a summary of ranks, names, guesses and hints. It is useful when the tree is difficult to follow on a small screen. Return to tree switches back.

What does a hint cost?

The visible hint offer exchanges three guesses for a revealed rank. It is not a free extra clue: weigh that cost against the guesses you have left.
